Rio Grande National Forest
The Rio Grande National Forest (NF) is 1.86 million acres located in southwestern Colorado and remains one of the true undiscovered jewels of Colorado. The Continental Divide runs for 236 miles along most of the western border of the Forest. The Forest presents myriad ecosystems; from 7600-ft alpine desert to over 14,300-ft in the majestic Sangre de Cristo Wilderness on the eastern side. The Forest includes all or parts of four Wilderness Areas (South San Juan, Weminuche, La Garita and Sangre de Cristo). The Forest also is the headwaters of the Rio Grande River and has the moonscape wonder of the Wheeler Geologic Area, established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1911. Hiking, mountain biking, 4 wheeler and jeep trails allow almost everyone to enjoy the solitude and wildlife of the area.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
With the passage of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Act, resources now also include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000' in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands--all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species.
Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde, Spanish for "green table", offers an unparalleled opportunity to see and experience a unique cultural and physical landscape. . From approximately A.D. 600 through A.D. 1300 people lived and flourished in communities throughout the area, eventually building elaborate stone villages in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls.
Fishing
Fish the " Gold Medal Waters" of the Rio Grande. Find large Rainbows and Browns on the Conejos River.
Enjoy the rare chance to fish the San Juan River and smaller streams in the Weminuche Wilderness area.
Guide service and float trips are available from Wolf Creek Anglers
Rafting
Raft the Rio Grande with Mountain Man
The stretch of the Rio Grande where we operate is a pristine high country river with Class 2-3 rapids and unparalleled scenery. May through June is the best time for white water action, but no matter what the season, the river has its own character and each trip is as rewarding as the first.
